I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The host file is the first place your computer looks to resolve addresses, if there is no record for that domain it will go to the DNS Server and check there.
Modifying the host file is useful in scenarios that you directly need to bypass DNS, say for development purposes

Generally you only need an entry in your Hosts file to relate IP address to NAME when you do not have a DNS setup to do this.

I put Server Names and internal IP addresses in this file to access client servers when I connect by VPN.

I have never needed HOSTS for anything else.

Modifying the hosts file is a recommended practice to rid yourself of known malware sites.  This site keeps an  up to date alternate hosts file:

No, it is not. You just need to elevate editor (such as notepad) to edit it
