mysql db error

service mysqld status ERROR! MySQL is not running, but lock file (/var/lock/subsys/mysql) exists

but mysql is working fine. ( application is able to select/insert/update the db without any problem)  is it ok or  i can anticipate any problem in future. it is a production db

It is not OK to have any inconsistency in production! People may try to start/restart mysql assuming it is dead and can create havoc...

So why this error? May be your socket / pid files are not in place? may be you have different service defined? `service mysql stats`.
ps -ef | grep mysql
lsof | <pid file>
lsof | <socket file>
