Whats the possibility of having Exchange 2010 (Standard) Server to coexist with Exchange 2016 (standard or Enterprise) server?

Question:
Is it possible for a single Exchange 2010 (Standard) Server to coexist with a single Exchange 2016 (standard or Enterprise)  server?

Background:
We have a single physical Exchange 2010 standard server in production already and would like to introduce a virtual machine running Exchange 2016 Standard or Enterprise Server to coexist with the Exchange 2010 server. Note:  we not yet decided on Exchange 2016 Standard or enterprise due to a vast difference in cost.

The Exchange 2016 server will run all features and the Exchange 2010 standard server will be used for just remote archiving still proving capabilities for users.

Thank you

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Thank you for your reply.

Having perused the URLs you posted, I'm assuming that its fine for Exchange 2010 Standard edition and Exchange 2016 Standard / Enterprise edition to coexist as there is nothing stated at all about edition incompatibility!

So thanks.

Individual Exchange server versions do not matter and can be mixed and matched.  However, if you had a DAG, the OS and Exchange versions must match.

100% yes, Exchange org does not care about standard/enterprise*, those provide limitations within the actual server not the org :)
