What is causing password issues between Google and Outlook setup?

Hi  -

I’m trying to link outlook 2010 to my Google account. Once I go through all the setup steps, outlook keeps asking for a password. I know it’s do to 2 factor authentication because I do not have 2 factor set up on Google. What else could be causing this issue?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi 40star,

I've recently published an article that addresses this exact problem and how to get around it.

HOW TO: Solve a Repeating Password Error when Setting up IMAP with Gmail in Outlook

Step by step instructions with screenshots and I guarantee the process works because I've used it myself for clients countless times. It's one of the reasons I wrote it. Whilst the problem is generally related to 2 factor authentication being turned on, it can be caused by other factors as well. Following the steps in the above article should help.

The screenshots of Outlook are version 2016, but the process will be almost identical in Outlook 2010 and it should solve your problem for you. The short answer is you'll need to create and use an app password for your Outlook, as well as make sure your IMAP settings in Gmail have been set up correctly.

I hope that's helpful.

Regards, Andrew
