I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You can send an "email" the the user's cell provider, which will convert it to a text and send it to the user. If you have very few SMS messages that would work. You have to use the correct domain for the email. For example, Verizon is form plain text with a limit of 140 characters.

The trouble with that is you must know the user's cell carrier, and if it changes then you'd have to update that in your system.

I use Twiliio, but there are other services like that as well. I don't know of any free ones. Twilio (and the others like it, such as Plivo) are simple to use, and reasonably priced (at least in my opinion).
