The first thing to try? Delete Normal.dot
Close Word, saving your current document
Find your NORMAL.dot on your hard drive and delete it.
Reopen Word. This will create a new NORMAL.dot with all of the default styles.

i don't know why (i have the same problem in Word 2010)

BUT - i created a temporary document using the new NORMAL.DOTM, then i defined a paragraph as Heading 1

copy the Heading 1 paragraph to your document using Keep Original Style
