Looking for opinion on Shopify from those who have actually used it.

I want to create a website for my online retail store (medium to large inventory) and I am greatly considering Shopify. Can anyone here share their experience with Shopify? What are the pros and cons? I've spoken to a representative and found many pros. However, I would love to hear from people who have used it.

Additionally, how easy are their templates to modify? I have front-end experience but it's very basic and I also don't want to spend a lot of time coding. I'm looking to modify colors, fonts, buttons, pretty much everything on the front-end. Are there any templates you recommend?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I've used Shopify to manage a medium size eCommerce business and don't have anything bad to say about it.

When evaluating, I looked at a lot of different systems but eventually narrowed it to Shopify and BigCommerce. At the time, the transaction fees and monthly cost was better with Shopify. I'm not sure how the two compare now. That was the biggest consideration for me, as most eCommerce systems offer very similar functionality.

The other aspect that was fairly important was that the system we used for order fulfillment (Teapplix), had tied into Shopify's api so we could manage all our orders from amazon, ebay, shopify, etc., inside of one single order management system.

Some things may be important to how you manage your store that you should consider in evaluating between the two. Do you plan to offer pre-orders? Do you care about abandoned cart retention? Do you plan to offer sizing options? Gift Cards? etc. All of those things can significantly influence your decision if they send you into a higher pricing tier.

As for modifying the templates, what we did was purchase a nice simple/modern existing template from their store (https://themes.shopify.com/), then we hired a very cheap front end developer from Upwork.com to make small changes to it.
