Cannot located new SQL 2014 server.

I installed an SQL2014 server.   I am trying to move an existing database from SQL2008 to the new server.  The 2014 is on a different server.  When I get to the section to select the server to move to, it finds the server name, but not the SQL.  e.g. the server name is Finance.   The SQL is Finance\SQLEXPRESS.  It only finds Finance.

The new SQL2014 opens fine and it has one database.  Also, it has the SP2 patch.

Why is the SQL not being found?

Don't move the database.  Create a backup and copy the backup to the new server and then restore it in e.g. SSMS.

ok.   That worked.   However, why is the new SQL server not listed?
You need three prerequisites:
- SQL Server Browser service running on the computer where the SQL Server is installed.
- UDP port 1434 open on firewall
- also the SQL Server Configuration Manager can set the HideInstance flag (see

If you don't see the SQL Server instance name you still may write it explicitly to the connection string.
