VPN Connection Issue
Hi Guys,
I've setup a VPN connection on a server (Windows Server 2012), but I am unable to establish a connection from external.
Connecting internally to the local IP of the server works just fine ;-)
The error I am receiving is:
"The remote connection was denied, because the username and password combination you provided is not recognised, or the select authentication protocol is not permitted on the remote access server"
When I try to Telnet into the server, I get an initial black green, then the connection has timed-out message
Could this error relate to our router not allowing connections through from the internet, or is this error specific to username / password and authentication issues?
Trying to connect externally, I am using Windows 10, but also tried from another external server with Windows 2016 Standard edition.

are you using the same username and password at both ends? and how are you connecting externally?

Thanks Rob,
Our router config is managed by a 3rd party, and the VPN pass through was requested.
From the error I gathered that the problem was authentication related? (Seems that this is not the case)?
I will ask for the router VPN-port config to be confirmed and ports allowed as per your post.
VPN Type on the client is set = Automatic
Allow these protocols = MS Chap version 2
Network IP4, Advanced = Use remote default gateway is set to off

Whet type of VPN?
PPTP has a two step authentication. It requires port 1723 be forwarded for the initial hand shaking, and then uses GRE to do the authentication. If GRE pass-through is not enabled you get an authentication error, even if username and password are not enabled. GRE pass-through is not configured by port forwarding.
I truly hope you are not using PPTP.
