Starting fresh with Time Machine Drives

How to format an external hard disk for Time Machine.

I did not follow the directions here:
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/29093057/How-to-make-a-TimeMachine-drive-erase-the-oldest-backups.html

and simply erased the filed from Finder.

Time Machine still thinks it's full!

What is the next step? How can I reformat this as a TimeMachine drive?

Thanks

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You might want to consider erasing the external hard drive with Disk Utility, accessible from Application -> Utilities. Click on the drive you want to erase and select "Erase". Make sure to choose "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as the format. After that process, the system will prompt you a message asking you to use the disk as Time Machine.
