If your mask is the last usable address is 254.  Such as  The next address is the broadcast address for that range and shouldn’t be used for a host.

If you have ip like with subnet which is actually a default subnet mask,so your starting ip will be and ending valid host  ip will be & will be the broad cast ip of this network.
