Yes, you can replace it without problem as long as the replacement controller has no configuration stored on it. If it is second hand controller then remove all disks, replace controller, go into the config program and erase the config then power off and fit the disks.

This is covered in the user guide under section 2.4.7 Drive Migration. Can't copy it as it's copy protected PDF.
Google for "this is called drive migration" and you'll find the manual easily enough.
