Any attachment you open causes word to crash?
Do you have 32 AND 64 versions of office? such as Outlook a 32 bit and Word a 64?
You can verify this by checking in Word under File > Account > About Word, the first line. - Do the same for Outlook

32 bit version of office 2016.  Word attachment crash with the error.  Word encountered a problem and needs to close.
Excel attachments, pdf attachments open without a problem.
I would be suspicious that there's still a 64-bit part of Office installed.  A complete uninstall and reinstall may be in order.  I'd certainly try a repair install as that is fairly quick.

If you save the attachment and then open it in Word, does that work?

Repair Did not resolve the issue.  These workstations had been running the 64 bit edition and encountered an issue with word last week. 64 bit  Office was completely uninstalled and 32 Bit installed.

A new word document opens without a problem.  Word attachments get the error.
