i was asked whether particular email address is active or not
we have exchange 2010 , where and what should I check whether it is inactive or active

If you open the Exchange Management Console and do the following:

Click Recipient Configuration, then click Create Filter (see below screenshot):

Now select your filter options to see if the email address in question even exists. If it is found then yes the address is an active address. If it turns up no results then the address doesn't exist in your org. See screen shot for filter choices"

Basically, if an email address exists, it is active--no matter if it's a primary address or proxy (secondary) addresses.

you can do a get-recipient to see if that returns you any result. It will check your contacts\mail users\mailboxes\shared mailbox etc in your organization to see if that is a valid address or it exists anywhere in the org.
