Taking over a small office - EMAIL / Website

What leg work is required in order to accomplish the following:

  • We are taking over a small company that has it's own website domain and email system.  xyz.com for example

  • Parent company wants to take owership of xyz.com and then configure xyz.com using our Office 365 subscription

  • We are not taking any of their exsisting email information store.. they will own that and we will start fresh with newly create xyz.com email addresses

I am currently not sure what email system they are using... but i'm sure it's not Office 365 hosted by Microsoft like ours is.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Well first off you will need to find out what email system they are using.

After that you will need to make sure that system does NOT connect to the internet anymore by changing/removing their A and MX records.

As long as that legacy system is decommissioned, you should be good to move forward.

This is simple enough if you are not migrating their email to Office 365. Find out who owns the DNS record. You can start office 365 as a trial with up to 25 licenses through their website or you can get subscription from vendor which you have to apply the licenses. Setup account and verify the domain and go the DNS manger and point the MX record etc.. to Office 365 and you will be getting email to office 365.
