Unable to install IE10 or IE11

I have a recent installation of Windows 7 Professional SP-1, which includes IE8.  I am unable to install IE10 or IE11.  The installation appears to start out OK, including downloading and installing required updates, and downloading and installing the browser itself.  But In both cases, after "Restarting Programs", there is a message that installation did not complete.  A link appears on the desktop to an Internet Explorer Troubleshooter, but all it says is that my version is outdated, and I need to update it.  I do not find IE8 among the applications in Control Panel>Programs and Features or installed updates, so I can't remove it.

Are you installing this through Windows Updates or by manually downloading the installers?  Manually running the installers may work better.

I've seen problems of this sort where the installation of SP1 didn't really complete though it generally showed that it had.  Because it wasn't fully installed, IE10 and IE11 wouldn't install.

I'd try to uninstall SP1 and then reinstall SP1 and then try IE10 or IE11.

I should mention that I wasn't able to resolve this on a couple of machines (SP1 wouldn't uninstall or reinstall) so I restored them from a recent image.

Look in Programs and Features, Windows Features (left side of Programs and Features). IE should be shown in Windows Features. Uncheck it, restart (you must), go back and enable IE, restart (you must) and now run Windows Updates including Recommended Updates.

Does IE update to the current version?

If you are still having issues with this, go to Microsoft Downloads, find Windows 7 SP-1 for your machine, download it and reinstall it.

Thanks to all Experts.  I'll post again after trying the steps you provided.  However, I'm going to skip the Windows Updates.  I know this is counter to everyone's advice, but I did install all of them, with serious undesired consequences, so I restored a saved image from before the updates, and I don't want to go there again.

You may have legacy or incompatible software install, or you may need to install BIOS , chipset and all other driver updates

I followed the instructions about removing IE8, rebooting, and adding IE8.  I also got the list of required Windows Updates for IE11, and all of them were installed successfully.  There is still the incomplete installation of IE11.  I don't think I have incompatible legacy software, because I have an identical computer, with identical applications and settings, which is running IE11.

You may need to do a Windows 7 Repair Install on the problem computer to fix this. For this, you need the Windows 7 DVD or a working Recovery partition.
