I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The logged error is:
"[08001][10061][Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0]A network-related or instance-specific error has occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. Server is not found or not accessible. Check if instance name is correct and if SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. For more information see SQL Server Books Online."

This can be because of one of the following reasons:
  • SQL Server service or the machine where SQL Server is installed is down.
  • SQL Server Browser service is not running.
  • SQL Server is not configured to allow remote connections.
  • SQL Server machine is behind a firewall and there's no rule to allow traffic to the server.

Rebooted SQL server and that solved my problem

This might mean that the SQL Server service or the SQL Brower was stopped and the reboot just started the service. You shouldn't need to restart if you did check those services before.

Next time please do. Rebooting isn't usually the solution. At least the permanent solution as issues can return again later.
