Your sitemap.xml is not a valid sitemap.  This site shows what a valid sitemap should look like.

This is weird because I used xml-sitemaps.com to create it.  The home page was created with Mobirise.  Any chance that could be a problem?
Lot of tools are available on Internet that generate XML sitemap on free of cost. Please generate a new xml sitemap for your website and resubmit it on GWT. I think it's much better for you rather than finding a missing tag in your existing xml sitemap..

Did you open http://www.gopherstateevents.com/sitemap.xml ?

Your sitemap is not showing correct. Those errors you are getting is expected

<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9 http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9/sitemap.xsd"></urlset>

So irrespective of what tool you are using to create the sitemap, it is not correct on the server and you need to upload/replace it with the correct one

I just created a sitemap according to the reference supplied by Dave Baldwin.  Can someone take a look at it for me...it seems to simple.  I would also like whatever insight I can get as to why one of the most common sites for generating sitemaps could not do one for this site.  Any insight on that would be much appreciated!

Thank you!
