License Activation for older Microsoft Product, Activate MSSQL2012 standard with MSSQL2016 key?

MS SQL license keys, could someone clarify for me please. We have an app that is supported up to SQL Standard 2012, but i can't seem to find licenses out there for the 120day SQL eval. Could i purchase say SQL standard2016 license and activate 2012 with it?

regards and thanks!

Supporting a specific MSSQL release usually means that you can install a newer release, but have to set the database compatibility level of the DB concerned to that older release. There are only very few exceptions where this does not work.

I doubt it very much. ASs far as I know, MS only provide support back 2 versions (i.e. to SQL2014 at this stage).

You could also ask Microsoft directly...i think that if you enroll to their business program (i can't remember the name of it) you can get access to all their products.
Edit...for SQL 2012 the Microsoft solution is Volume Licensing...take a look here.

Do you just need the trial period?  Do you have the 2012 installer?

You don't need an activation key for this.  During install select Install Free Edition and specify the version "Evaluation" that you want.
This installation cannot be easily converted to an activated status though so assume it will be removed rather than upgraded once you've finished with it.
