Wierd error message: "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" (???)

Not that long ago, SQL Server was running just fine, but now it doesn't.  Every time I invoke the program, I get the following cryptic error message: "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation," at which point, the program shuts down.  Does anyone happen to know what this message means and what to do about it?  Thank you, ~ Peter Ferber

is it really SQL Server Service throwing that error? Or rather SSMS tool or something else as described here:
https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/sqlserver/en-US/d27f7ec7-1048-4017-8e79-5eca7ed3a9b6/sql-server-management-studio-execution-plan-error-exception-has-been-thrown-by-the-target-of-an?forum=sqltools

Can you post the Event Viewer actual error about the SQL Server assuming no confidential info will be shown?
