Sbs2008 to Server 2016/Exchange 2016

We have a client running SBS 2008 as a VM.
I have created 2 additional VM's running Server 2016 standard, 2016 VM1 ive created as a BDC of the SBS2008 box.
2016 VM2 i plan to install Exchange 2016 on.
On installing Exchange 2016 it is detecting Exchange already installed on the SBS 2008 VM which it wants to be upgrade, its also asking that the "Forest Functional Level" be elevated to 2008 R2 to allow install to continue.
I wanted to install a "Clean" copy of Exchange 2016 and just import individual .pst files into new mailboxes.
I'm looking for guidance on how best to move from Sbs 2008 to 2 2016 Servers.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

SBS 2008 has Exchange 2007 in self, and upgrade from Exchange 2007 to 2016 is not supported.
You would have to upgrade to Exchange 2010/2013, and then to 2016.

If you want to do clean install then you would need to install new domain and in it new Exchange, but then you would not have users, groups, permissions, etc..
So I would suggest to do a migration to 2013 and then to 2016. You would need 1 more VM for it, so you need additional resources.

Regards,
Ivan.

Thank you Ivan,
So i would create a VM running Server 2012 and Exchange 2013, and add that server to the existing domain,
then migrate Exchange 2007 from the SBS box to the Exchange 2013 VM.
Then from the Exchange 2013 to Server 2016 running Exchange 2016 ?

Thanks again

Hi,

You cannot migrate directly from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2016

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms.exch.setupreadiness.e16e12coexistenceminversionrequirement%28v=exchg.160%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

I recommend to migrate exchange 2007 (SBS 2008) to exchange 2013 (window server 2012) first. Check this link:

https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/51f5839d-f92f-464a-b3ae-885637a247a3/migration-guide-to-migrate-sbs-2008-with-exchange-2007-to-server-2012-with-exchange-2013?forum=smallbusinessserver

Another option is to have exported PST files. You could try to uninstall Exchange 2007. Create new Exchange 2016, configure new accounts and import PST files.

Hi,

you would migrate Exchange to Exchange 2013 VM and domain to either Windows 2012/2016 DC.
*Haven't tried to introduce Windows 2016 DC into Windows 2008 environment, so I am not 100% sure if that work. I know it works with Windows 2012*

After you migrate DC to new server, move exchange to 2013 and then demote SBS box.
After there is no Exchange 2007 in domain, you can deploy Exchange 2016.
