vlan configure at switch

Dear Experts

in the local network only for 3 work stations separate ip subnet to be defined and only these 3 workstations should be allowed to access the application server hosted in the same local network, the application server is a VM in ESXi server ( Vmware essential plus license), please suggest should this be done at switch level by configuring VLAN and also vlan at vmware level, please suggest , should we have to go for managed switch please suggest.

Since you didn't specify the switch type I am going to assume cisco..

Here is a document that shows you how to configure a basic VLAN on a cisco catalyst switch.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/lan-switching/vlan/10023-3.html

Configure the VLAN on Catalyst Switches That Run CatOS
Create VLANs and Ports
Complete the steps in this section in order to create a VLAN.
Before you can create a VLAN, the switch must be in VTP server mode or VTP transparent mode. If the switch is a VTP server, you must define a VTP domain name before you can add any VLANs.

You will need to configure both physical switch and ESXi networking for VLANs
