I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The issue with read receipts is an external provider may or may not allow them.  In most cases read receipts are blocked by providers to prevent spammers from phishing for valid email addresses or not supported based on the mail server used.

Another thought is it may be that the sent message was marked as spam on Gmail that the read receipt didn't send.  I would write list the email address and try again ensuring it doesn't go to the junk mail folder.

If you have an address then no. If you have an account that uses the gmail backbone, you can, but then only if the recipient has the feature turned on. Many people, myself included, turn off read receipts.
