Trouble opening desktop links / shortcuts in Windows with Chrome

Create a new shortcut with below path.

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe

Also there is another question very similar here and it is likely that recent changes in Chrome (it updates near weekly) have caused this. You may need to make new URLs as that will likely work.

Tried both suggestions, and neither worked.

I assume this is Windows 10 that you're using?

My shortcuts in google chrome doesn't work with a windows laptop. They worked for a while, but now when i click on the desktop icon, it just opens a folder with an address in it. no link.

Have you tried just uninstalling Chrome, then before installing Chrome again, delete the Chrome folder you will find in;

C:\Users\YOUR_USER_PROFILE\AppData\Local\Chrome

Delete the above "Chrome" folder, then reinstall Google Chrome.

If it was working before but has stopped, this should definitely work.

Note you will lose your saved Favorites and Extensions, so if that's a concern, Export your favorites from Chrome before doing the above, and make a note of what extensions you were using. To avoid the problem recurring, after reinstalling Chrome, install any extensions you have one at a time and test - it may be an extension you added that is causing the problem.

IF the above doesn't work, I'd suggest testing in another user profile. The one you are using may be corrupted.
