two question about windows 10

Windows 10 - 2 things... Is there a way to automatically change the default browser to IE instead of Edge?  We have many, many machines to replace and reinstall and that's just too much work to keep doing that manually.  2nd thing.  Is there then a way to stop IE from automatically opening every time you reboot?

Here is how to change the default browser in Win10...

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4028606/windows-change-your-default-browser-in-windows-10

This will work for ANY browser.

It may be that Internet Explorer is setup to run on Startup.

See if the below helps.

Right-click on your Taskbar and then choose Task Manager.
On the Startup tab, right-click Internet Explorer and then choose Disable.

OK I know how to do that.  I was just wondering if it could be automated.  I have over 600 machines to replace with windows 10
You would need to use a GPO to set this

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/ie11-deploy-guide/set-the-default-browser-using-group-policy

Take one problem machine and work through why IE starts on reboot. It should not. First, make sure it is closed before restarting because Windows 10 is starting to restart previously opened applications.  There may be nothing wrong.

Second, use Autoruns (Sys Internals) to see if somehow IE is in the startup sequence. Delete the startup entry, close out and restart.  Does IE start?
OK thanks.  One question with the GPO.  I have to create the XML file to associate it too?  and if so can I do it just for IE?
Yes on the first question and on the second: I think so but I am not certain.
LOL OK I have to do some research on this. Thanks.
Yes. I am not a GPO whiz but that is what you need here.
Unfortunately  when I try to run the command I'm getting 0x80004002 error Gotta love Microsoft.
Maybe someone with some GPO knowledge will step in.

Users should be able to change the default if they need to.
IT's not the GPO that the issue is with it's running the command Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:\\xxx\xxx\xxx\xxx\defaultassociations.xml
Here is another support document from Microsoft

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/export-or-import-default-application-associations

You need a space after associations:   and before \\server.

See if that helps.
If I type Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:\\Server\Share\AppAssoc.xml  I get that error
If I type Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations: \\ Server\Share\AppAssoc.xml I get error 87?
The first one is a syntax error - no space.

The second one is a Windows Server connection error.

Command prompt:  Type NET USE T: \\server\share and you should connect. Do you?
YEs its already a mapped drive.  You think I should use the drive letter instead?
Error 0x80004002 the current user associations could not be exported to a file... X:\share\share\name.xm.
The syntax says no.

Error 87 is an SQL Server error.

Is the path string a connection to a folder or SQL?  I am not sure how to resolve that.
No all I'm trying to do is create an xml file so associate defaults so I can make sure IE is the default browser..  I'm even running via powershell.
What's interesting is if I run the command DISM.exe /Online /Get-DefaultAppAssociations it prints everything.  I just can use the export file.  I wonder if I copy to a txt file if I can change to an xml?
I am not sure but you can try. GPO setup is not my specialty
Take
Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:c:\test\AppAssoc.xml

Now take that file and reduce it to the extensions you'd like to set (you will understand how to do that - it is easy - and then setup the GPO pointing to that file.
Ok printing the file and then saving it to an XML did work, so at least I have the file now I have to figure out if I can import it.
Import? You use the GPO from (aforementioned) link https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/ie11-deploy-guide/set-the-default-browser-using-group-policy and point it to a network location or a local file, if computers are used offline. To distribute the xml file locally, use a GPP file item.
That's what I'm trying to do a GPP instead of a GPO because a GPO will run everytime, a gpp I can set for one time.  How to I import the xml via gpp?  What would the destination path be?
OK I'm not sure this is going to work...   I changed my default app to IE but it's still showing edge?
<Association Identifier="http" ProgId="AppXq0fevzme2pys62n3e0fbqa7peapykr8v" ApplicationName="Microsoft Edge" ApplyOnUpgrade="true" OverwriteIfProgIdIs="AppXehk712w0hx4w5b8k25kg808a9h84jamg" />
  <Association Identifier="https" ProgId="AppX90nv6nhay5n6a98fnetv7tpk64pp35es" ApplicationName="Microsoft Edge" ApplyOnUpgrade="true" OverwriteIfProgIdIs="AppXz8ws88f5y0y5nyrw1b3pj7xtm779tj2t" />

And even if I change Microsoft Edge to Internet Explorer and put the file in system32 it doesn't change anything.
1 you need all possible extensions and protocols set to IE. So configure a system manually and export the xml file using the command I gave you. Now reduce that xml file so that it only has associations with IE in it. Now open the local gpedit for a test, point to that file (see my last link) and log off and take a (previously unconfigured) test user and verify with him before you do any further tests on a domain level.
It will work at the 2nd logon of that user (that's normal), not on the first logon.
OK on my machine I have change the default app to Internet Explorer - I've attached a screenshot however, when I run the command
Windows PowerShell

also, for those struggling with the command DISM.exe /online /export-defaultappassociations... Try this, it works..
DISM.exe /Online /Get-DefaultAppAssociations >C:\folder\default.xml
However, I don't see where this file changes edge to IE and how and where to import this file.

OK I don't see in IE where you set IE as the default browser I clicked on Set Programs and that takes be back to the control panel for defaults and I clicked on Set associations and that does the same... And every time II try to run Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:c:\test\AppAssoc.xml I get the same error regardless if I try to run in powershell or Command as administrator.
IE.png
"I clicked on Set associations and that does the same" - that's interesting. Your IE settings look different to mine, I have  a hyperlink there:
User generated imagewhich, when clicked upon, leads me to
User generated imageGo there manually:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Default Programs\Set Default Programs
Maybe because mine is already set? But I've done all of that and still I can't get it to work :)
There seems to be something funny... I get the same results as you, with edge all over on a 1709 test machine. What win10 version is yours?
Will look into it deeper tonight.
Mine is enterprise the rest are Pro and it's version 1709 16299.371..
Ok, something with that mechanism is broken. Not only is your error with the export reproducible, but also the exported file (using ">") does not seem to include the browser settings correctly. Sorry, you will have to wait for the next windows version (out soon), or ask Microsoft support.
Well I found something on line that actually worked.
The is the XML file

and this is the PS script..
Dism /online /import-defaultappassociations:c:\IE-DefaultBrowser.xml
Here's the kicker.  You have to copy the xml file to the local machine and then run the script.  I'm thinking of a login script after the file is copied to the local C drive.  It works so far.
Logon scripts cannot be used since DISM needs administrative permissions. Use a startup script.
I'm trying still in the testing phase.  Thanks for all your help
The new version of win10 is out - please retry there. The dism export works flawlwssly, there.
The new version maybe out but I'm not sure we've upgraded yet.

I actually installed it on my own machine - against the rules but I did it anyway.  The DISM works!  So I'm still in the process but thanks...
Thanks it worked great
WellingtonIS, can you write down what you have done to make the Export work of DISM?
Not like McKnife said, it is the Windows Update which is freaking me out.
As I am still not able to find the specified KB, can you tell me how you get it to work?

Thanks!!!!
I updated windows to 1803 which fixed this issue.
Allright, thanks.
I guess I'm going to wait for the update so.
V1803 is already out and you can upgrade now
You can download the mediacreation tool1803.exe from Microsoft create a CD or USB and upgrade that way.
Well, I need a MS Update for 1709 (which should have been this month, but anyway). It's not an option to upgrade to 1803. It's not my home computer :) I have a bit more to manage.
Anyway, thank you.
You can get that from the Windows Update Catalogue
