Not sure about windows as i have no such systems.
For linux the whole disk can be encrypted. (Rather proven technology since > 10 years now)
The method is called LUKS.
The Whole disk including root partition is encrypted. And requires a pass phrase during boot.
This should be available natively for any distro.   The method is using an initial RAmdisk image during booting with will establish the keys in the kernel to allow access to the disks.

Note the  swapspace should be encrypted as well, this will make going to standby and restart from there again impossible. (As the CPU will use a randomly defined key for the swapspace when the cpu & memory power down.

Regarding the encryption in windows operating system, you can use bitlocker to encrypt the hard drives and other units that you have additional.

You can use the third-party application axcrypt, it is very good and easy to use, it helps you to encrypt with passwords, put by yourself, folders, files, music, videos. I use this application and I always recommend it, annex reference link.

You can also use Keepass, attach the reference link:

Also at the security level of the operating system, you can apply user authentication policies, updated antivirus, updates, hidden operating system folders.

I have been using Bestcrypt for many years now and I highly recommend it.

Support (if needed) is good. The code is open source and there are no 'back doors'
There are just too many features to list here.

One new feature in the latest v4 release ......
It is now possible to perform major feature upgrades to Windows 10 systems
without having to decrypt the boot volume (for restarting purposes).
