Need to shrink the size of all images files in a folder

I have a folder with high res. pictures from my Canon and iPhone. They are fine to keep, since I need the detail as my research continues long after I take the pictures. But as email attachments, they are too large.

I need to shrink them both in their physical size an the resolution.

By "physical size' I mean when I open them in Finder, the Preview size can be reduced.

How can i best do this mass reduction on a Mac?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi newbieweb,

This article shows how to do it with GraphicsMagick:

Reduce the file size of many JPG files in many folders via an automated, mass, batch compression method

I've used it only on Windows, but it also runs on Linux and Mac, as discussed here:

Also, ImageMagick can do it. I prefer GM over IM, but both are excellent (GM is a fork of IM). IM is also cross-platform. Here's the Mac binary link:

If you're interested in seeing additional uses of the product, here are some other EE articles that I've written:

Create a PDF file with Contact Sheets (montage of thumbnails) for all JPG files in a folder and each of its subfolders using an automated, batch method

Create an image (BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIF, etc.) from a multi-page PDF

Convert a multi-page PDF file into multiple image files

Regards, Joe

That's great news, Robert! I didn't realize that it was already published at Amazon. When I get some spare time to read, I'll buy the Kindle version for my Fire HD 10. Congratulations!
