ASDM hangs on "software update completed" on new Cisco ASA 5506

We have a new Cisco ASA 5506.  Out of the box, we connect a computer, browse to https://192.168.1.1 and download the ASDM launcher.

It gets as far as "software update completed" but then it's just the blue circle of boredom for ever.  Same problem on a different computer, but both run Windows 10.

Reloading the ASA has no effect.

Googling suggests using a specific Java version (which appears to be no longer available) or downgrading the ASDM.  However if we have to use Java we want it to be the latest version, and likewise we want to use the ASA with an up-to-date operating system.

How can we:

1. Log onto the ASA to perform initial configuration?
2. Update it to the latest version?

Add a certificate exception in  the java control panel applet for the hostname/ip address that you are using to connect to the ASA

Are you downloading the ASDM installer, or trying to use web start ?

There is always the serial console to enable SSH and then use SSH.

You will need a valid support contract with Cisco to obtain ASDM software and ASA firmware.

We're trying to use the ASDM installer.  If we click web start nothing happens.

We can connect using the console cable to use the CLI, and indeed use SSH as you suggest - but we want to be able to use the ASDM for at least some of the configuration and monitoring features.

So if we need to download a different version of e.g. the ASDM because it doesn't work out of the box, we need to buy a support contract?  That seems a little unfair!

What version of Java are you running ?
What version of ASDM is it ?

ASDM runs fine on Windows 10, have you tried on a clean build that has not been joined to the domain to remove any possibility that it is a Anti-Virus/Malware or GPO enforced security restriction that you are experiencing ?

If you do not have a Cisco SmartNet contract, then I would suggest speaking to the vendor that supplied the ASA for current ASA and ASDM images (and AnyConnect if that is also required).

I've had the best luck using Internet Explorer, not Edge, not Chrome to run Adm from java web start. You have to allow it to run when prompted.
From command line, verify that there is a line for
Asdm image disk0:/asdm-791.bin (or whatever version is on the disk0:)
Also, use command line to generate RSS key
Crypto key generate RCA modulus 2048
Then try asdm
