Yes, if you want it to sync up with your mailbox, going with Exchange is the best method.

If you're email server is setup to work with a POP account, for example, it may have options for leaving messages on the server, etc. The problem here is it won't record when you've replied like Exchange will, and you will lose some features. I've found it can create some confusion if you use Outlook on a desktop and check email on your phone.

If you're working exclusively on the phone, it won't matter all that much either way.

Its and exchange account so its a question of how to set it up ...

Is the native ap better than the exchange ap for android?

I know on an iphone,  the native ap is better and the Exchange ap is horrible, well I think so
