How to tell if hard drive is dead

Hard drive diagnostics test stops at 99% every time I run it and never quite finishes 100%. Here is what it stops at.
SMART Check: Passed

Long DST:  Test in progress ……….
Estimate Time Remaining:  1 Sec
Progress 99% but never hits 100%
Every time I boot the HP laptop up it says operating system not found and wants to run a bios check diagnostics?

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I'd take the disk out and attach it to another computer (but not as the primary drive).  Boot from the computer's primary drive and see if you can then access the laptop hard disk.

You can also use the computer's hard disk and manufacturer's utils to scan the laptop hard disk for errors.

The disk could be dead or it is unable to access the boot sector of the hard disk.

Hard drives are cheap.  SMART is FAR from 100% accurate.  If a drive is behaving strangely and you care about the data stored on it or the computer running off it, REPLACE IT.  Trying to "confirm" a drive is failing given the costs involved in data recovery or lost productivity is a fools errand in my opinion.

I agree. Not sure why SMART kept popping up? I prefer other tools to that but laptop would not allow me to get to the drive. I had planned to get into safe mode to see if I could that way but had to leave the classroom due to testing that was going on. Thanks. I greatly appreciate the comment. It adds to the knowledge I may not yet have but do now.
