Increase power to powered USB hub

I have bought a powdered USB hub. 7 ports share a 3amp supply.

i have now realised that 3amps is not enough for what i need. i intend on using 4 of the usb ports and would ideally like up to 3amps per port. so a maximum of 12amps in total.  I could manage with 10amps if there was no other option.

is there a way to do this? obviously i can just go and buy a bigger power supply and power the hub from that but i have no idea what effect that will have, if any?

can anyone recommend a hackaround for this?

In order to avoid potential damage to the hub or to your computer (high current can swiftly wreck electronic components), get a bigger and proper hub for your needs. That is the best way

Any USB 1.0 and 2.0 is capable of up to 500mA (0.5A); with USB 3.0, it moves up to 900mA (0.9A), so you should not be trying to use 3 amps per port.

there a few 2amp/port hubs available on the market. but these normally come iv very large cases and my project is a little restricted on space.

i'm looking for a hackaround answer. not a "go and buy a bigger hub" answer.

Getting a higher powered power supply will make no difference since the hub is limited in what it can supply and the power brick provided is sufficient for that.

USB3 allows 3A to be pulled straight from the 5v rail without negotiating power (normally the peripheral has to ask for more power over the data lines). If it's just power you need and not data there are USB chargers that give 3A per port.

If you need data and higher power then you will probably have to use USB power injectors.

If you're intending to use this as some kind of charging station then you've bought the wrong kit.
You would need something like this

A hackaround on the hub designed to allow data transmission isn't going to work.

thanks for all the replies. here's some more info which will perhaps fill in some of the gaps.

my intention is to use the usb hub to power my usb miners. they mine crypto currency. without overclocking them they draw ~.7amp. however to maximise their mining ability i can tweek them up until they draw ~3amp.

so... yes data transfer is also happening at the same time

USB miners are so inefficient you'll never earn more than the electricity; still, it's fun trying.

There's a circuit diagram for an USB power injector at https://www.eeweb.com/extreme-circuits/usb-power-injector-for-external-hard-drives . You could just scale it up to multiple ports (but USB miners are even more inefficient on high power, that's why Sidehack reduces the power of antminer S7s to make them more efficient at some cost to hash rate.)

OK if you're running ASIC erupters:

1) try to run them at 2.5A max even if capable of 3A on most USB BEs the voltage regulators are not accurate enough and if you run them all at 3A and one or more are over you will kill most of them (and there's a small risk to the PC).

2) Buy a hub which is designed to run with a power supply that matches your need from the outset.  Hubs are built to a tight spec. They don't use components that are built for higher performance than you're paying them for. Running a higher current *will* shorten the hub lifespan.

3) And you should already be aware of this.  Look on this as a project. You're not going to see a return on a setup based on BEs.  Although you may recover your hardware costs over the first couple of years (if you ignore the electricity costs).
