That screenshot refers to communication encryption between the Outlook client and the Exchange server <u>not</u> for encrypting outgoing email messages. &nbsp;To encrypt an email you will need to select this in Outlook as described <a href="https://support.office.com/en-us/article/encrypt-email-messages-373339cb-bf1a-4509-b296-802a39d801dc" rel="ugc"><b>here</b></a>. &nbsp;You can encrypt just one message or all outgoing messages.<br />

No, the recipient will need the sender's public key. &nbsp;The sender do not need the recipient's public key.<br />

There are two scenarios provide in the link and it answered your question in more detail:<br />

&quot;If the recipient is within your organisation (ie, they are set up on the same Exchange server as you) and they have a certificate, the recipient can publish their certificate to GAL (Global Address List). &nbsp;This allows a copy of the recipients public key to be stored on the Exchange server. &nbsp;When anyone in your organisation attempts to encrypt to this recipient, Outlook will look on the Exchange server first for a corresponding public key.<br />

If neither of the first two scenarios above are met, then Outlook will attempt to use it's contact list credentials for an attached certificate. &nbsp;If the user is outside of your organisation, then you must add them as a contact and include their certificate.&quot;<br />

You're most welcome. &nbsp;No the recipient don't need to purchase one unless if they are external and they also wishes to encrypt their email communication with you then they will have to do the same and get their own certificate.

Hi, I will be sending to external users, so as I can see if I add them to my contacts in Outlook they will then be able to unencrypt my messages, is that correct or do I need to send them a copy of my certificate first before they can read my e mails ?

When they receive a signed email from you they can right-click on your name in the email and select Add to Contacts from the drop-down list. &nbsp;If the email is signed or encrypted, you certificate should be included automatically. &nbsp;You don't need to send the certificate separately.

Hi Peter, &nbsp;I don't think the recipient is required to purchase a certificate to read your encrypted email. &nbsp;They only need your public key to decrypt your email. &nbsp;However, it wouldn't make sense if only you encrypt your email but they response to you in plain email.<br />

They will need to purchase a certificate to encrypt their own email then share with you their public key. &nbsp;This way the email is encrypted in both direction.

SBS 2011 E Mail Encryption
