Mapping drives between Win 10 Home and Pro...

I have 3 Win 10 PC's...
#1  Win 10 Pro build 1709
#2  Win 10 Pro build 1709
#3 Win 10 Home build 1803

I can map drives between #1 and #2 no problems...
But I cannot map drives from/to #3...

All three in same workgroup...
All three have the same profile with same pw...and admin rights...

When I click on Network icon on desktop...it shows my router...2 printers that are attached to PC #1 and #2...but NO other PC's...

On #3...Win 10 Home build 1803...I turned SMB completely on...as this is what I had to do on a clients PC to get a NAS working...Don't know if that's part of the
problem or not...

Appreciate any help...

AND....if it turns out that I cannot map drives between W10 Home and W10 Pro...I can rebuilt the Home pc...

Hi! You may like to try these steps :)

1) Go to each computer in the homegroup and delete the following directory

 C:\windows\serviceprofiles\localservice\appdata\roaming\peernetworking
(This directory is protected, so you will have to confirm when you try to access it)
Shut the computer down and leave it off

2) On a Windows 10 desktop connect it to your network.
Setup a new Homegroup on your network
Write down your password (At this point, you will need to put that password in a safe place)

3) Go to each computer and add them to the new Homegroup.

4) Test and make sure you can get to your devices and directories

If you can't from one computer, leave the Homegroup and re-add the computer and try to share the files.
Homegroups are gone with W10 1803, AFAIK, so it would be important to know if it is really about a workgroup or a homegroup.
In a workgroup, all you should need to access this machine is to enable File and Printer Sharing. To access another machine, nothing should be required on this (client) machine.
The old SMBv1, which I think you meant above as having enabled, is required only for older NAS and Windows prior to Vista acting as a file server.
Make sure on all three computers in Network Sharing Center that Network Discovery, File and Print Sharing, and Use User Names and Passwords are all enabled. Restart if you
make any changes.

Now open a command prompt on one of the V1709 machines and type:

NET USE T:  \\IPaddress_of_V1803\folder and press enter.

Does this work and if not , what numerical error do you get?

ASKER

John...net use T: \\10.0.0.107\d$

Password is invalid for \\10.0.0.107\d$
Enter the user name for '10.0.0.107' :...........I enter the user name...
Enter the password for 10.0.0.107:................I enter the pw and get..."system error 5 has occurred...
Access is denied...

All 3 PC's are in Workgroup...
All 3 have Network Discovery ON...
All 3 have Filel and Print Sharing ON...
All 3 have exactly the same username and password...

Everything works between the two 1709...
But 1803 is blocked...
And 1803 is W10 Home....

The 1803 was a W7 Home...when I upgraded W10 Home was installed...
I can rebuild this PC with W7 Pro and then upgrade...that will give me
W10 Pro....and after all MS updates are applied...it should be 1803 again...
And if I cannot map drives etc at that point....then something is broken...

I could force the two 1709 PC's up to 1803....but they are good working
PC's and right now my comfort level with 1803 is not very good...

Look at the Firewall settings in the Windows Home machine as that may be blocking the other machines.
John....Win Defender firewall is OFF....

MASQ...Tried your idea...turned the service ON and started it...
When I go to Network...the PC now will find itself but nothing else on the network...

I think I'm going to bite the bullet...and install Win 7 Pro...then upgrade it to Win 10 Pro...
Gonna take some time...but that will put all 3 PC's on W10 Pro...

And if I have issues then....will have to assume something wrong with 1803...

Will post results later...
I am sharing folders with Version 1803 with no issue.

Instead of going back to Windows 7, purchase a Pro upgrade for the Home machine and apply the key to upgrade to Pro.
Dang....wish I checked my email earlier....great idea....but I already wiped the hd and installing W7 now...that would be the BEST idea...too late...
I have wiped the drive...installed W7 Pro...then installed W10 Pro on top...
Since this is a brand new W7 install...is there ANY benefit to re-installing W10
clean...???
If Windows 10 is working well after upgrading from a clean install of Windows 7, then there should not be any issue.
Ok...same song...second verse...

Fresh install W10 Pro v1803...created 2ed account with Net Use and put it in admin group...worked perfectly and did not need
security questions...I like this method...

I have Printer & File Sharing on for all networks...Defender Firewall is OFF...

Click on Network on the Desktop...it finds a printer attached to another PC w10 Pro..1706...my gateway...py celll phone...but NO other computers...
When I turn to auto and start "Function Discovery Resource Publication" ...the only change is Network will show this computer and no other computers...

Right now I'm forcing 1803 upgrade on another pc...so I will have 2 PC's on 1803...see if I can map drives between them...

I do my drive mapping the old fashioned way...just like with XP..W7 etc...Dont use any homegroup...

There is something simple blocking mapping...right now I just don;t see it...

Thank you for you past suggestions and looking for more suggestions...

John...I have 2 accounts on the PC...Judy that I created with the install of W10...and Steve which I created after...
I created Steve admin account with Net Use commands....that worked perfectly...

Password Protected Sharing is turned ON on all PC's...

In process of forcing upgrade to 1803 on another less important PC....will see how that works with my problem 1803 and my two 1709's...

Back at this tomorrow...
Thanks for hanging in with me...
So you are making progress with the networking - please keep us posted.
Well...I got it...I think...
Wasn't so difficult as it was confusing...
Biggest peeve about Msoft is everytime the bring out a new OS...
They have to change everything...the look...placement...names of stuff...ugh...:(

So..."Function Discovery Resource Publication" is turned on both PC's...
PC1 is on 1803 and PC2 is on 1709...

The main point is from MASQ..."Give Access" instead of Home Group...
I looked at it but I really didn't understand what he was telling me...
Then I ran into this.... https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4092694/windows-10-changes-to-file-sharing-over-a-network ...Started to become clearer...

So my problem was in no understanding the new process...and not even knowing that
a new sharing process was in place...All my previous sharing was done with W7 then upgraade to W10...so all shares remained in place...

Confusing...If you put Network icon on the desktop...and click on it...it used to show all your network connections including computers...but you couldn't share from any of those computers if you didn't set up sharing on the host...Now...even if you have shared on the host computers still don;t show up...

So I had to share everything with \\server\share...rather than graphicly...

Still don;t understand why I cannot do \\server\C$...

Many thanks for all your support and suggestions...
Thanks for the update and I was happy to help you with this.   Mapping to \\server\c$ requires you to be Admin. Newer security requirements prevail here.
I have Admin rights on all my computers...
I'll figure it out...
Or maybe W10 1803 won;'t allow it...

Thanks for your support...
