Could you point the better tool/ stretegy to backup a 500 GB HD on a external HD?

Hi Experts

Could you point the better tool/ stretegy to backup a 500 GB HD on a external HD?

My purpose is to format HD and then reinstall Win7.

I guess there are tools to automatize the task and avoid to copy and paste every folder from the HD to an external HD.

Thanks in advance!

Take full image backup with at least 2 different tools to at least different drives...Aomei Backupper is a great option...

If you are re-installing Windows you don't really need to create an image
(although it would be very useful if you forgot to copy something).
You will still have to go through the image file, foder by folder to retrieve data.
Manual copying is best in my opinion. No automated tool will do all the following.

Just backup (copy) your data files (and any drivers) folder by folder. ....
(CHECK: All users, Temp, Downloads, Libraries, Templates, C:\ Application Data, etc)

Some programs allow you create a settings file, so create them and backup.
Firefox > Bookmarks and your session file.
Dreamweaver > Web Definitions
Any Program Serial Numbers

Check where every program stores data/templates/settings
Take your time!
you can make an image with the free paragon soft :
add to that a manual copy of your documents, pictures, mail be safe
i would never trust an "automatic" program for this -  they don't know if there are documents or data stored elsewhere

I'm preparing to do the task.

Just a doubt. Is it advisable to complete reformat the HD before to reinstall Win7 ?

Yes - I recommend formatting the drive.

As well as your external drive, I also recommend doing an online backup of important data (e.g. Google drive)
If you have a Desktop consider installing W7 on a new hard drive (or SSD) to your PC.
Use your old HD for data/Backups.
you can format the disk during new install of win 7, so nothing special is needed
yhat way you're sure to have a clean start
