reading my sd card on my laptop

i have an integrated sd card reader in my dell inspiron laptop....when i put my phone sd card into the reader, it says it is not a recognized file format and offers to format the sd card.....
i want to copy the contents of my sd card onto my laptop, how can i do this? thanks

I have done this before. I would try the card in another machine and with a USB to SD card adapter. Does this work? It should

As a workaround, can you tether the phone via USB, access the card and copy the contents?

Once that is done, you can keep testing other's ideas.
The SD card reader in your laptop may not be capable of reading the type of SD card you inserted.  The SD card may be an SD, SDHC, or SDXC for example.  If your laptop SD card reader only support SD then it won't read the other format.
