Tape library error (urgent)
Hi everyone.
I need help with the following problem:
Today in the morning i loaded 4 scratch tapes on my TS3200 IBM library.

Thanks for your response. The tape drives are not showing any error or cleanning request messag. Regarding the media errors ,there could be media errors on four different tapes? I´ll restart the tape library.

ASC=04, ASCQ= 02 which means LOGICAL UNIT NOT READY, INITIALIZING COMMAND REQUIRED
I would triple check the device definitions to their defined TSM path. With windows it tends to be a path/incorrect device name issue

Yes you can do that. I would run the cleaning tape anyway to be sure

It looks like all your scratch tapes were mounted on Drive 2. Clean that drive and try again in an attempt to eliminate the drive being the issue.

Well, I'd be inclined of offline Drive2 so tapes can't use it, then reset the write errors on the scratch tapes you loaded and run a backup job so that drive1 is used. That way if the scratch tapes error again, then it's still possible that tapes are faulty.
However, madunix's point is worth revisiting. I've had a windows TSM server redefine the paths before. It's been a little while since I worked with TSM on windows, but if you check the serial number of the drive details defined on to the TSM server (q dr f=d) against the physical devices (I would eyeball the rear of the tape drives themselves - assuming you have access) that would eliminate any path issue.

Have you checked the device names/ssn's at OS level against your TSM defined drives by running;
<install_path>/tsmdlst.exe
To check your path settings?
I had to delete and redefine the drives to correct my situation.

Hmm. Not the output I was expecting.
When I have run it in the past, I get an output like:
This then shows me which device is which, from the point of view of the OS. Then you can check the drive configuration details in the TSM console. You ran the tsmdlst.exe in a cmd windows as an administrator user, yes?

There's a command that gives the 'mtn.n.n.n' values assigned to each drive, I thought that was it. Can you try

Ok, I think I see.
Your device paths are of the format
In your TSM configuration \\.\Tape0 according to TSM is drive1 and \\.\Tape1 is drive2. This looks OK, but I'd still want to verify that \\.\Tape0 is device mt2.0.0.2 and \\.\Tape1 is mt2.0.0.3.
Perhaps you can check this using the OS device manager UI?
Alternatively, you can use the ITDT utility.

If you want to test the drives anyway install ITDT on the host https://ibm.biz/BdHLYL (itdtinst - text mode version ). Please make sure to provide one scratch tape for this test . After you run ITDT accept the license then - press "S" to scan, choose the number + ENTER corresponding to the drive to be tested, choose "T" - Test - follow prompts to insert scratch tape into i/o station. After the test is finished press "R" and then "D" to force dumps for this drive. After you tested all the drives compress the whole /output subdirectory in itdt's installation folder and upload to ecurep. ITDT instructions available in chapter 8 :

After update the firmware, the drives are working as expected.
Are you able to remove the tapes, clean the drives (cleaning tape), restart the machine and try again?
If tape errors, can you just make a new backup after cleaning?
