What is the correct process to use to set up an Outlook 2016 Gmail account to save emails to a PST file instead of an OST file?

Hi,

i think that only POP3 account will save data to .pst, in Outlook 2016. All other will use .ost.
So, configure GMAIL account as POP3, and it should work.

Regards,
Ivan.

Yes, POP3 will do this. I have done it for clients.  IMAP forces an OST file.

Are there any other ways to make Outlook 2016 use a PST rather than an OST file for a Gmail account?

If this can't be done natively through Outlook are there any third party utilities or programs I can install that will allow this to be done?

Yes. Set up POP3 Access in Outlook to your Gmail Account as we noted above. That will make a PST file. That is the only way as any other way (IMAP) will make an OST file.

POP3 account is the only automatic way for data to be saved to a PST file. You need to configure the GMail server to use POP as well as configure the account in Outlook as POP3.

You're only other alternative would be to configure the account using IMAP and manually backing up (exporting the data from the OST file to a PST file). Note: contacts/calendar data does not sync with the server so if you have data in Imap based contact/calendar folders marked as "This Computer Only" that data will be completely lost if Outlook can't find the file or you delete the account from the profile
