TSM volumes in unavailable and filling status at the same time.

Hi everyone,
I have several tapes on my tsm library IBM3200 with the following status:

Volume status: Filling
Access: Unavailable
Number of Write Errors: 1

For example:

 Volume Name: DP0294L5
 Storage Pool Name: T_WINTEL_SERVERS
 Device Class Name: LTO_V5_HP
 Estimated Capacity: 2.7 T
 Pct Util: 86.1
 Volume Status: Filling
 Access: Unavailable
 Pct. Reclaimable Space: 1.8
Scratch Volume?: Yes
In Error State?: No
Number of Writable Sides: 1
Number of Times Mounted: 181
Number of Write Errors: 1

or

Volume Name: DP0298L5
Storage Pool Name: T_WINTEL_SERVERS
Device Class Name: LTO_V5_HP
Estimated Capacity: 2.7 T
Scaled Capacity Applied:
Pct Util: 0.0
Volume Status: Filling
Access: Read-Only

Pct. Reclaimable Space: 4.0
Scratch Volume?: Yes
In Error State?: Yes
Number of Writable Sides: 1
Number of Times Mounted: 10
Write Pass Number: 1
Approx. Date Last Written: 04/05/2018 11:14:26
Approx. Date Last Read: 04/05/2018 00:14:26
Date Became Pending:
Number of Write Errors: 1

Please what should i do to turn this tapes to a healthy status or scratch status?

thanks in advance.

Hi again!
Tapes can be “Filling “ and “Unavailable “ at the same time, both states are independent of each other. The “Unavailable “ state comes e. g. from read or write errors (as obviously in your case) or from the tapes being misplaced.
You can return them to “Readwrite” with
UPD VOL <volname” ACC=READWR
Nevertheless you  should check the tapes with
AUDIT VOL <volname> FIX=YES

Before running the above you must make sure that your drives aren’t faulty and that heads are clean.
Check the server log for signalled hardware errors and run diagnostics against the drives.

ASKER

Wool .
we updated the firmware from both drives yesterday (it was outdated)so:

1-i´ll clean the drives (the library is not showing any cleanning message , but i´ll clean it anyway)
2-i´ll check the tapes.

i´ll back with the results,.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Max!
i was suspecting that! The library show no errors on Drives (all green status). Is there any way to confirm the drives failure? (logs , checks , or something like that?)

thanks in advance
@Wool,
i ran Three audit vol  Fix=yes  and all of the gave me the same output:

ANR0985I Process 181 for AUDIT VOLUME (REPAIR) running in
the BACKGROUND completed with completion state FAILURE at
  11:10:26. (SESSION: 3179, PROCESS: 181)
ANR1893E Process 181 for AUDIT VOLUME (REPAIR) completed
with a completion state of FAILURE. (SESSION: 3179,
  PROCESS: 181)
I assume you didn't set the volumes in question back to READWR beforehand, correct?

UPD VOL <volname” ACC=READWR
Yes wool. first i change the status to "readwrite"
Hi,

Hi Max!

you just need to tell support that you have done the tests that i described above ... they'll understand

max
@Max,
Thanks. I just opened a ticket with our  local service support (ibm is not supporting us anymore) . In the meantime how can get scratchs tapes avoiding the library put them on unavailable or filling status?
>> Yes wool. first i change the status to "readwrite"  <<

Does that mean you did it or is that a question?

If you changed to READWR beforehand and got the error nonetheless - perhaps ther was no free drive at that moment?

Check the TSM log!
wool,
Yes, i did it. First i changed the status to readwrite:

tsm: VWARCOSSTSM01>update vol DP0416L5 access=readwrite
ANR2207I Volume DP0416L5 updated.

And then i ran the audit fix:

AUDIT VOL DP0416L5 FIX=YES

181   Audit Volume  Volume DP0416L5 (storage pool T_WINTEL_SERVERS),
(Repair)           Files Processed: 0, Damaged Files Deleted: 0,
Partial Files Skipped: 0. Current Physical File
(bytes): 4,889,772 Waiting for mount of input
                                   volume DP0416L5 (2 seconds).

and the tsm log show this:

ANR0985I Process 181 for AUDIT VOLUME (REPAIR) running in
the BACKGROUND completed with completion state FAILURE at
  11:10:26. (SESSION: 3179, PROCESS: 181)
ANR1893E Process 181 for AUDIT VOLUME (REPAIR) completed
with a completion state of FAILURE. (SESSION: 3179,
  PROCESS: 181)
The most common reason for this is that mounting the tape failed, most probably due to the lack of available drives.

Another possible reason is an excessive amount of read errors, but in this case you should have seen quite a lot of related messages in the log.
Wool, both drives are free and ready. no process related with the drives are running.
And there were no other relevant messages in the log than the ones you posted?
What does Q VOL <volname> F=D say now? Did the READWR state persist?
Wool;

So the volume has become unavailable again. Please check the log to find out when and why this happened.
wool:

ANR8356E Incorrect volume DP0400L5 was mounted instead of
  volume DP0416L5 in library LIBTSM_IBM. (SESSION: 3179,
  PROCESS: 181)
ANR8381E LTO volume DP0416L5 could not be mounted in drive
  DRIVE1 (\\.\Tape1). (SESSION: 3179, PROCESS: 181)
ANR1402W Mount request denied for volume DP0416L5 - volume
  unavailable. (SESSION: 3179, PROCESS: 181)
ANR1410W Access mode for volume DP0416L5 now set to
  "unavailable". (SESSION: 3179, PROCESS: 181)
ANR2321W Audit volume process terminated for volume
  DP0416L5 - storage media inaccessible. (SESSION: 3179,
  PROCESS: 181)
Again the mismatch between external and internal labels.
I thought we solved this one!
Thanks max
