Can't set up network between 2 Windows 10 computers

I have 5 computers. 3 are Windows 10 and 2 are Windows 7. I am trying to set up networking across my machines. I've started with 2 Windows 10 and have enabled networking on them and have removed the requirement for user name and password. My main machine doesn't see the other machine or vice versa. My machine no longer has a homegroup as per the latest Windows 10 update. The other machine does but I would rather not use it since it is going away.  What do I need to do to correct this problem?

Set them all in the same workgroup.
Set in all teh same username and password.
And fill out the names and IPs of the machines.
Ping is disabled by default so you would need to enable it on the Firewall rules.
Look at and review my article on Folder Sharing.  Follow all the pointers in there.

https://www.experts-exchange.com/articles/16639/Folder-sharing-on-modern-machines.html

You may need to set up user B on the A machine if the user names are different.
You did not specified if you have Windows Home or Pro edition
I assume you have Home.

If you do, navigate to Microsoft tutorial

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17145/windows-homegroup-from-start-to-finish

Remember to check if File and Printer sharing is ON (this will create exception on firewall)

If you do have PRO, then put all computer to same Group, then enable Printer and File sharing

I have pro and I have them all in the same group and printer and file sharing are enabled but they still don't connect. Perhaps I should restart both machines.
Go through all the settings in my article (lots), make changes and pay a lot of attention to using user names and passwords. Then restart the machines.

I connect like this routinely.
Try disable firewall for test only on both computers.
Make sure you've set Share folder on workstation you want to access to and Everyone has read share rights and Everyone has Read and List Folders security rights

John.

I went through the steps in your article and I have 2 problems. On one machine, it seems to connect to the other but the network drive is listed but it comes up totally empty. From the target machine to the other machine, the available drives are listed but when I click on them all I get is a properties screen and no connection.
If the machines are secure (your machines), go to the drive of the target machine and permit the whole drive to the user name of the source machine. Then you should see everything.

How do I permit my whole drive?
Right click on the properties of the drive, permissions (security) and permit to the user name. Make sure you use the password of the user name as well.

Should I create a user with the same name as on the remote machine or should I use remote-machine-name\user and then supply the password?

If you don't have network (domain controller) and you can't setup home group try to add EVERYONE in share and security permissions for root of the drive (Right click on drive in Explorer then Share it
Add Everyone with RW rights
then right click again and go to Properties, then security tab,, add Everyone with R, W and List Folders,
Check box Apply to subfolders and click OK

John provided all the steps necessary to getting the network connection. Logging in the user on my main computer into the client computer was the final step to get access to the other computer. However, it seems to be a very work intensive process if many users would be needed to be added.

Tom Cieslik's idea may have worked but since I was following John's direction, I didn't want to try giving rights to everyone.
Thank you for the update and I was pleased to help out.
