In place upgrade of 2008 R2 DC running ADFS

Hi All,

I planning to perform an upgrade of our DC that's currently a Server 2008 R2 running ADFS to Server 2012 R2.

ADFS has a few RPT  configured including O365, along with a SMTP virtual server running on IIS6.0 with quite a bit of rules configured.

I am curious as to what the impact would be to ADFS and the IIS6.0 virtual SMTP server.

ADFS environment

2.0 (runs on DC)

Proxy server 2.0 (runs on server on DMZ network)

Will I need to upgrade the proxy at the same time as the DC that runs 2.0?

Or can I function with ADFS 3.0 and an ADFS 2.0 proxy?

Thank you Simon, that was the impression I got with ADFS, I was just curious is anyone else has attempted an in-place upgrade.

I am still curious on the Proxy ADFS 2.0 server functioning with ADFS 3.0

Thank you Simon, I think I'll move forward with a fresh install and migration.
No Worries.

Good Luck!

The problem is that adda 2.0 is iis based and 3.0 is API based and hence no compatibility
Hence build parallel 3.0 instance and that is only supported method
