How can I find out if a computer is on the network and who has logged in. We use netbios names. Other than ping. I have pinged it and get destination host not found. I also did an nslookup and tried.

How to track a computer

are these commands run at the cmd prompt?
I have never used this tool so assume I am really a novice at this one. Thanks.
Copy and paste to a notepad and save as whologgedin.cmd but don't forget to update the DomainName\AdminAccount with a valid administrator account.
after I save this to notepad I assume I copy and paste back to the cmd prompt?
If ping gives " destination host not found" you'll probablby unable to use the above script.
First of all you have to find out why the target computer can't be found.
What kind of name resolution is used in your network?
The output of the command

ipconfig /all

enetred in a  command prompt posted here would help.
Net bios names. I did do an nslookup and tried the IP address as well and got the same answer.

Thanks. I will try that if the school system allows it.
Netcrunch Tools app is also handy. Search it in Microsoft Store.
If you run the Advanced IP Scanner using an administrator account, it will even display the username of person who is currently logged in. There's a portable version of this app so you don't even need to install.
Another one I need to see if they let me use here. very restrictive. I will install the portable one and see what bells ring. Thanks.
You can do that. There is not much of an install and the product is very safe. I use it.
I tried the script mentioned above.
I am getting an "Invalid Switch" error message.
That is not good? I am going to try the advanced IP
Sorry, are we talking about Windows clients? The script above is only for Windows.
If the client respond to ping it will check who is currently logged in.
Both examples were really good. Thanks guys for all the help. I will find the user who uses it now.
Thanks and good luck.
