Network Accessibility to Windows 10 Computer Fails since 1803 Update Installed

\\ACCOUNTING runs Windows 10 Pro.  \\WORKSTATION runs Windows 7 Pro.  The Windows 10 computer had the 1803 update installed two nights ago.  Since then, \\ACCOUNTING is not accessible for network shares by \\WORKSTATION.  It can be pinged, but any attempt to access shares (i.e. accounting application that worked without error prior to 1803) no longer work.  Attempts to create other network shares for temporary mapping also fail.  I've paused virus protection and have turned off the firewall with no change in accessibility.  As such, \\WORKSTATION can no longer access \\ACCOUNTING to run accounting app or to access any other shares.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!

Try accessing the Windows 10 machine by IP Address.

Make sure Windows 7 has SMBv1 disabled.

Same result when using IP address (had tried this previously anticipating that I might have a DNS issue).  Did check SMB and found that v1 existed.  Disabled as per your provided link, restarted and tried by IP again - still FAILS to connect.

Smbv1 should have nothing to do with it as it wouldn't be used by default, so leave it as is and better verify port connectivity:
On win7, open a command line and launch
Telnet win10machine 445

If the screen goes blank, the port is open.
Telnet client is a Windowsfeature that might need to be installed, first: Open appwiz.cpL, go to add/remove windows features.
Double check your Advanced Network Properties.

Make sure Network Discovery and File/Print Sharing are ON and make sure Homegroup is OFF. V1803 no longer supports Homegroup.

Did the following at a command prompt...

TELNET COMPUTERNAME 445

I received a blank screen with a flashing cursor.

To add clarification, the only change from "it worked" to it not working was the 1803 Win 10 update on \\ACCOUNTING.
Ok, the port is open, that's good.
Now share the error message, please.

1803 is not doing anything differently, so it could be, that your AV software is simply incompatible to it and needs to be uninstalled. (not only deactivated). Also try to update all network card drives (both sides).

Error Message -

"\\ACCOUNTING is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Logon failure user account restriction.  Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced."

Will uninstall AV and retry.  If still unsuccessful, will update drivers.

Thanks!

Jim
When you are doing driver updates, also update BIOS, Chipset and Video as BIOS updates are need for the Meltdown / Spectre threats and Windows works with these updates.

Removed AV from Win10 machine, restarted - no change.  Updated drivers on both sides, restarted - no change.

Updated drivers were network drivers.  Looked to be an update for Win10 computer but not one for Win7 computer.

Jim
Maybe do a repair install on your Windows 10 machine. I have a lot of 1803 running with no issue.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Windows 10 is running, so click on the Download button (not Upgrade Button, select Open (Run) but NOT Save. Allow the program to run. Allow drivers to update. Then select Keep Everything.

From the link you provided, John, I selected "Download tool now" and then "Run" (an option avail in MS Edge but not Firefox).  I'm next presented with...
   - Upgrade this PC now
or
   - Create installation media

I've stopped at this point as I'm uncertain as to using the first option... and the 2nd option is of no current value to me (as I'm accessing the computer, remotely).

Jim
The second option allows you to run in place which is how I have done this many times. You may need to get someone there to do this.
Create installation media

You can also do this and run the media installer as should allow you to do a repair.

Thank you, Fred... you hit it on the nose!  I went to Advanced Settings, made some changes and connectivity has been restored.  Honestly, a change of settings was something I would not have anticipated from an update.  A change in some function, maybe... but to just change an existing setting seems ludicrous and wrong.  But that was exactly what I found.  Thank you for pointing me in the right direction and for saving me from having to do an image restore from before the update.  And thank you for taking the time to see my query and to respond.  VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!

After the April 2018 Win 10 Update 1803, network connectivity to the computer was lost.  It was recommended that I look at the Advanced Sharing settings in Network and Internet Settings to see if they were set appropriately.  Apparently the update modifies those existing settings and required me to reset them to our needs.  After returning those settings as previously set, full network connectivity was restored.

McKnife - Thank you for your effort to help.

John - Thank you for your persistence in working towards helping me find a solution.  I suspect that you are much appreciated by your clients/customers.  In the past I've been able to divide rewards... this time I was not presented with that option.  Had such been available, I'd have given you a portion for you determination to help me find an answer.  Instead, you'll have to accept my appreciation.

Fred - Obviously, yours was the answer and explanation I needed.  Thank you for your time and expertise.  It was very much appreciated!

Jim
What setting in particular was not like it was before?
Note: Any major, semi-anual "update" like 1709 or 1803 is still a re-installation of the OS, and has to reapply your settings. That is the reason some settings are reset to a different state than you changed them to, because it's a complicated and error prone process ;-).

McKnife - Thank you for asking about the changed settings.  I should have included that in my earlier report.  Under "All Networks" (in Advanced Sharing Options), I changed the following:

Public Folder Sharing - [Selected] Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public Folders

Password Protected Sharing - [Selected] Turn off password protected sharing

Once access was returned, I did not go back to verify if both changes or simply one was necessary... but I'd suspect it was the "Password Protected Sharing" selection that did the trick.

Thanks again!

Jim

It's possible that these settings don't stick on upgrading since upgrades revert some non-default settings back to defaults if they are security-related.
