Windows Update 1803 - Keyboard Layout

Hello,

So I have been getting a couple calls from clients, their Windows 10 computers did the most recent update 1803 & when it comes back up, it is asking about the keyboard layout, if you choose US, then it says ROLLBACK, Windows 10, volume 1 or volume 2, whatever... continue & it NEVER gets past that screen.

One client I was able to PULL drive to get the data, but NOW I am not able to get windows 10 going... it looks like the Windows 10 update 1803 has CRASHED the computer... what the heck... in the last week I have had 4 clients, with same issue...

How do I fix??  What the heck to do??  I hope someone has a fix, please let me know... thank you for your input!

Read the comments in this ZDnet article which deals with this issue.

We have not had any issue with Lenovo machines.

I see no connection to that link, John. The question author reports a problem that he has right after upgrading and reports boot options are shown: "rollback", "windows 10 volume 1", "win10 volume 2".

etronics, that happened to some and yesterday, I participated in a similar question that has no solution yet. When the solution turns up, I'll let you know. It would be interesting to know, if the partitioning was changed by windows setup - can you answer that?
i had a couple of clients with their AZERTY keuboard turning to QWERTY after the update-
i set it back to azerty in the region and language settings, and it was cured AFTER a reboot

The partitioning did not change . The recovery partition seems to have a different label (but that is going from memory)
That question was meant for the author.

As far as I know the partition did not change, when I pulled the drive on one of my clients, it was just showing 1 partition (C: Drive), & all the files were there, so I extracted all the data & out the drive back in, but now the system is still Unusable...

I was able to get into the 1st Volume 1, I had tried all the other options, but none got u anywhere...

When I got in through the Volume 1, the first one let me into Windows, but u still can't click on the windows key... if u right click for personalize, I'll get the ms:settings error...

This is what is happening on one of the units...

It's crazy Microsoft would put out such an UNSTABLE update...

I just had another client, text me overnight... that's 5 computers this week!!! Crazy!!
The update is stable on our computers.

On one of the machines, update BIOS, Chipset and Video drivers and then restart and test.

On this same machine, try a Windows 10 Repair Install as well.

HOw did you verify the partitioning? Did you just connect it to another machine and see what shows up in explorer? That is not enoughz. Please open diskmgmt.msc and look at the details (which only makes sense if you know how details looked like before upgrading).
no I just hooked it up to a device that reads the drive, hooked that up to my computer, via usb & it only showed 1 drive, normally it will show c drive & d drive if there are 2...
There is a new update to Windows 10 out just now (this morning). KB4100403. Try installing that update.
I will try that... not sure I can even get to that... I can't get into settings??

It gives u that ms:settings error from a long time ago... I tried to use the fix I had for that a long time ago, but it didn't work...
You are not very clear. Initially, you wrote " it NEVER gets past that screen", so I assumed, you cannot even boot windows.
Now you write "It gives u that ms:settings error from a long time ago", which could mean, windows is bootable. Please clarify.

About partitioning: It would matter if the number of partitions (including boot and recovery and EFI partitions) has changed.
Yea sorry, I was able to get past the keyboard screen, but then when it goes into windows it doesn't let u do anything...

Again I have 2 units I have been working on, one, was just replaced...

The other I did get past initial screen by trying all the options & one of them worked, but windows is NOT workable in that form..

I have 3 other clients I just found out about yesterday that all have the keyboard screen up & I haven't went over yet...

Hopefully that clarifies a bit
can my previous comment not help?  i got no reaction on it :

i had a couple of clients with their AZERTY keyboard turning to QWERTY after the update-

Nobus
I will try that when I get back in front of it
Thank u
Nobus that did not work... any other suggestions guys?  I am sure there are loads of peeps experiencing the SAME ISSUE!!
If the above does not work, and assuming you have a backup, make a Windows 10 ISO file from the Microsoft Media Creation link above and reinstall Windows. Do this on one problem machine and see if that works.
post a screenshot of the language setting plse telling me it did not work does not tell me anything - i can't see what you saw

Hi guys,

Sorry none of these solutions worked... spent hours & hours on it for clients... they opted to replace units...

Good news, I was able to pull the hard drives & extract data from all units...

one another note:  one think that looked promising, but did not work was this, so I thought I would post it, to maybe help someone else:

This is if you were able to get past the initial "choose keyboard layout" - although like I said it did not work for me..

One other thing I came across was this, pointing at an Avast issue...

Hope it helps someone else...

Thanks for all the feedback
