I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Did you replace the cartridge before being prompted or was the printer off when you replaced the cartridge
Remove all cartridges and replace them one by one.

If this does not solve the problem, insert the old cartridge and ensure that it shows empty and that the printer prompts for replacing the cartridge.
Re-insert the new cartridge (printer ON) ensuring that all packaging has been properly removed.

Try shutting down the printer and remove the power cord if it is still not detected
Restart and check.

Pull the offending cartridge and examine the contacts (if it has contacts; some cartridges are just ink tanks.)  Be sure that any protective film over the contacts, the vent port or the ink port was removed.  Wipe the contacts gently (they don't put much gold on these) with a swab moistened with isopropyl alcohol.  Blot the contacts with a tissue.

Now take a strong light and look at the mating contacts inside the printer's print carriage.  Again, use a swab moistened with isopropyl to clean them.  Be careful as some contacts use sharp springs or points and such are easy to damage beyond repair.  Blot the mating contacts dry with a tissue.

Wait ten minutes for any water residual in the isopropyl to dry out.  Replace the offending cartridge.  Cycle power on the printer and hope for the best.

If the printer still fails to recognize the cartridge, you can try a cartridge from a different supplier if you want to roll the dice with the odds against you.  However, it is more likely that one or more of the tiny wires that connect the printhead carriage to the motherboard have failed (after all, they fold over twice for every line printed) and in this case it just ain't worth fixing when a new printer goes for under $50.

If it develops that the printer can't be brought back to operation, have a look at the Epson clearance store.  I buy my printers there.  Epson makes good, inexpensive, reliable printers, they ship for free, and third party ink tanks are dirt cheap.

If this is a newly purchased printer, make sure all the packing tape and foam blocks haven't left any residue near the ink receptacles. And that all the carts feel seated the same way.

Sounds like the flat cable to the printhead is broken on at least one wire.  Time for a new printer, I'm afraid.
