I cannot get windows 7 computer to play back .wav files.   I've tried Media Player, VLC, Real player.  It must be missing a codec pack but I cannot find anything online.   Any help would be awesome.

Cheers.

VLC plays just about anything without the need to install additional codecs, especially .wav files. If the file won't play then there may be an issue with the file.

I'm assuming you have checked that your hardware is good.  In that case you can try the basic K lite codec pack...

Other steps...

Use device manager to check properties your sound devices, make sure they all report "This device is working properly".
Check to make sure your speaker header is properly connected (unless you are using the audio ports on the Mobo.

.wav files don't require a codec.. they are simply pulse code modulation raw files.
My question is do other audio files play properly?
Commented:
Actually its true some .wav files do not require a codec.  However, depending on the recording options, .wav does support on Windows, the Audio Compression Manager. Any ACM codec can be used to compress a WAV file.

You can use VLC to see the properties of the file.  Load the file into VLC, then play and pause.   use Tools >> View Codec  or Ctl J
