What is difference between incremental backup and differential backup?

There is backup software that does incremental and differential without referring to the archive bit but uses its own catalog instead (it still has to check the timestamp to see if the file has been touched). Useful if someone does an emergency one-off full backup job with different software than you are using for your regular weekly full / daily differential routine.
