effort /steps to migrate from Oracle 10g to DB2
hi,
Anyone know how many effort /steps to migrate from Oracle 10g to DB2?
We have Oracle platform composite of :
1) Oracle application server.
2) Oracle OLAP server
3) Oracle BI server
4) Oracle BI answer.
5) Oracle database server.
Our code is build upon on java, ActiveX and VBA.

actually we try to migrate to MS SQL but let's see DB2 is even better. IBM here seems don't know how far away MS SQL and MariaDB is ! I said mariaDB already very good ! MariaDB is not copying feature from MS SQL and try to compatible with Oracle!
they said MS SQL and MariaDB is for small scale operation only ! ahhahahha
"1) What database engine will you run? (You're already interested in DB2.)"
We are trying to compare ! it is just part of our works. we are now try to find EFFORTS to move to ANY of these DB: MS SQL, MariaDB and DB2.
from our structure, can we only change Oracle database server to MS SQL and let the rest of Oracle Tier work with MS SQL ?
"2) What tool(s) will you use for your BI needs?"
If MS SQL, power BI, SSRS.
It will be congos if it is IBM, no other choice
"Don't expect a nearly trivial effort to just run your queries in the new tools"
Impossible! we will PoC that.
"If the database migrates to DB2 with very few changes the logical layer (bullet 3) should be mostly intact and the queries used in the BI layer should be mostly applicable in the new environment.
So move to MS SQL is not ? how about move to MariaDB ?
"3) What middleware product will you run?"
for what ? should OLAP be one ?
"Regardless, I don't think you're looking at a 1-man effort. You should expect to need somebody proficient in DB2 and migrating Oracle to it,"
yeah, will hire programmers to convert code / Vendor who did this before to do it for us if we have a lot of code to convert.

I've used and supported the Cogno tools for a long time. They're good. And they are completely different than they were 10 years ago. They've gone from client-centric to server-centric.
I have no comparison of costs, but you might look at Tableau, too, for analytics and reporting. It connects to any database.

yeah, I believe that. actually if company goes for IBM DB2, they will use Cogns. nothing else is better than them.

what is the brief introduction on diff between client-centric to server-centric ?
" you might look at Tableau, too, for analytics and reporting. It connects to any database.
yeah. that one is for MariaDB usually as MariaDB DO NOT have any build in BI reporting tools and Tableau is certified for MariaDB. other is power BI.

"About version 8 they moved to a server side process that delivers the results through the web browser"
just like Vsphere.
" No more proprietary client software running on the desktops."
Do you think it is better? this usually can take up more RAM than client side SW.
"Tableau will connect to just about anything. We're using it with SQL Server and Oracle."
Yeah , I prefer that.
Actually what feature do you think is making Tableau good? how about PowerBI ?
"Up through version 7?,"
what version 7 ?

"3) Oracle BI server -- Logical layer above the database for client access
4) Oracle BI answer -- Client tool(s) for queries through BI server"
these MUST work together, right?
where is the DB /content ? insider BI server or the Oracle DB with RAC ?
"1) Oracle application server -- Middleware layer(s)
2) Oracle OLAP server -- Analytics within the database server. (Most engines support something similar.)"
do they usually work with each other or they work independently ?

hi,
as we have this:
1) Oracle application server.
2) Oracle OLAP server
3) Oracle BI server
4) Oracle BI answer.
5) Oracle database server.
and I don't have much knowledge on all these Oracle product, when MAP back to MS SQL, what SQL service they are ?
Orable BI answer and BI server is MS SQL SSRS And report server (Report and report server DB)? Oracle OLAP Server is MS SQL SSAS service?

tks.
Migrating databases between engines always requires a significant effort and has some risk. Oracle 10g is old enough that an upgrade is certainly in order. Upgrading to a current product is the least risk, but I can understand the desire to move it to DB2 if you already have other databases there or plan to.
It looks like your entire environment is Oracle.
1) Oracle application server -- Middleware layer(s)
2) Oracle OLAP server -- Analytics within the database server. (Most engines support something similar.)
3) Oracle BI server -- Logical layer above the database for client access
4) Oracle BI answer -- Client tool(s) for queries through BI server
5) Oracle database server -- :)
To move this from Oracle you'll first need to make 3 really big decisions.
1) What database engine will you run? (You're already interested in DB2.)
2) What tool(s) will you use for your BI needs?
3) What middleware product will you run?
If the database migrates to DB2 with very few changes the logical layer (bullet 3) should be mostly intact and the queries used in the BI layer should be mostly applicable in the new environment. But be aware that all of these engines are proprietary. Don't expect a nearly trivial effort to just run your queries in the new tools.
Regardless, I don't think you're looking at a 1-man effort. You should expect to need somebody proficient in DB2 and migrating Oracle to it, somebody skilled with the new query (BI) tools, and somebody skilled with the middle layer(s). How long it takes to move everything is dependent on the size and complexity of the project.
You might be able to just move the data to DB2 (Ive never tried to connect the Oracle BI tools to DB2) but you'll still require Oracle licenses for the other products. It's probably not cost effective to do this or worth the risk.
