To Change Disk[OS Disk] controller form IDE0 to SATA/SCSI -vSphere 5.5

Due to limitation of NVE Backup -IDE is not supported , so i need to change the controller type of my Linux VM[Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 (32-bit)] from IDE0 to SATA/SCSI on vSphere 5.5
VM Tool -N/A
VM H/w Version -8
Please assist if this can be done with out any downtime ?
and best /valid method the change the controller.

have you tried:
power down machine
snapshot the machine
remove the vmdk from the ide controllers settings
go to the vm's settings, add the scsi controller
add hard disk, select the vmdk you removed 2 steps ago.
power on machine.. it may work depending upon the OS
it it works merge the snapshot
don't forget that 5.5 is soon to be EOL

Not yet because to power down vm -will have to plan for approved downtime  , any way to get this done online ?
 if not pls advise for best plan to be executed here
