Windows 10 VPN L2TP through iphone shared internet - not working

Hi,

I`m using a windows 10 pro computer with an internal vpn IPSEC/L2TP connection. When I try connecting to my iphone through shared internet, the VPN will not connect. My iphone X has the latest ios 11.4.

If I use my home network the VPN connection has no problem to connect.

I know that the pptp service has been closed down on iphone, but thought that L2TP would work.

Anyone have a workaround ?

I don't quite understand your configuration, but I assume at home there is no VPN connection?  VPN's generally do not have split tunneling enabled and thus block local connections to any device as a security feature.

Sorry for a confusing write up.

I will try to explain it a bit better:

My computers VPN is working with any internet provider except when I use my iPhone`s mobile network (think it is called personal hotspot on the English menu).
Doubt you can connect to the IPhone hotspot while the VPN is connected due the re reason mentioned above.  The iPhone traffic is blocked intentionally for security reasons by the VPN configuration.

Why are you wanting to do this.  Many companies use VPNs or proxy servers to control what your computer can connect to on the internet.  Using your own service, like an iPhone hotspot can be a violation of company policy.

Thanks for your follow up.

If I dont have an fixed internet connection on my computer (ex. out traveling) I use my iPhones cellular network to get internet on my computer, and further to connect my windows vpn client to my vpn server (to access my company documents and so on). I have done this for many years.

I firstly connect my computer to the iphones shared internet. Then I try to connect my computers VPN client, but it will just dismiss the connection.

Guess it must be an security thing in the latest updated on the iPhone. Since it has worked in the past.
I see, that is different. So you are connecting t the iPhone and then trying to connect the VPN.
It may be that the iPhone is assigned an IP address in a private network range by the ISP.  This is common but it indicates NAT (Network Address Translation).  This means the ISP is acting in the same way as your router at home.  The iPhone when acting as a hot spot is also providing NAT.  VPNs often do not like double NAT and may well be the problem.
