How to resolve the 8024402F windows encountered an unknown error during windows updates

starting windows updates then "8024402F windows encountered an unknown error ". This is on Windows 7, and Server 2003R2, and Server 2008R2 as seen in the attached pdf. numerous forums online have solutions that have not resolved this issue including the attached rtf and txt files . Rebooting, resetting windows update components, disabling trend mirco, checking the windowsupdate.log, updating IE, etc. These are production machines, and we cannot re-image them. These are physical machines as well as VMWare VMs. Any suggestions that have worked for anyone are welcome. Thanks in advance.

How about forgetting the updates and moving to an OS that is supported?

There haven't been updates for 2003r2 in years.  Why are you only trying to apply them now?

2008R2 is only 18 months away from no support.

Do yourself a favor and get these machines upgraded to 2016.

Once we complete the decommission of win 7, etc that will happen. However, we need to deal with the current setup and reduce security vulnerabilities in the enterprise until that happens.

Any suggestions for the hex cod error are sought until that day happens.

Thank you, scott. I've tried the windows-update-troubleshooter, but it is worth trying again on some of these machines. the offline updater is something I had not tried. Thank you again. I will let you know the outcome.
Thanks to Scott Silva for providing the solution for this issue. As he suggested, I have been successful in using this tool on Windows7, Server 2003, and Server 2008 boxes & VMs where this hex code error prevented patch downloads. This tool works as a local install as well as a remote install capacity.
